Mowat of Garth

The Mowats of Garth was a branch of the Mowats of Hugoland. The list is based on “County Families of Zetland Island” by Francis J. Grant unless otherwise noted.

I

Gilbert Mowat, of Garth. Younger son of Andrew Mowat of Hugoland and Ursula Tulloch. Born after March 1576. Graduate from University of Edinburgh 30 July 1601. Minister of Delting in 1607, thereafter in Northmaven. He was buried in St Magnus kirk, Northmaven. Married 1st Janet Pitcairn, daughter of Mr James Pitcairn. Married 2nd Margaret Forbes.

3.	Robert, minister of Yell in 1655, translated to Fetlar previous to 1689, and died unmarried before 1694, when his successor was appointed.
4.	Ursula, married Andrew Bruce of Muness, Shetland.

II

Mr James Mowat, of Ollaberry. He made over the estate of Garth to his brother Thomas. Died between September and December 1666. Married 1st Margaret Sinclair, died March 1645, daughter of James Sinclair of Quendale. Married 2nd Margaret Sinclair, daughter of George Sinclair of Rapness, relict of Edward Sinclair of Gyre in Orkney. Margaret was buried 9 November 1699. He was inherited by his daughters Barbara and Margaret 10 September 1672.¹

Children:
1.	Mr Gilbert Mowat, died.
2.	James, heir, died in Copenhagen by 1672, when his sisters Barbara and Margaret were served heirs to him in 443 ¼ merks land in Northmaven, 90 in Delting, 263 in Aithsting, and 34 ½ in Yell.
3.	Barbara, married George Cheyne of Esslemont. (Their daughter Barbara married Patrick Mowat of Hamnavoe, later of Balquholly.
4.	Margaret Mowat, married George Mowat of Hamnavoe (of the Balquholly branch).
5.	Janet, died.

Thomas Mowat, of Garth. Married Barbara Sinclair.

5.	Grizel, married captain Laurence Middleton of Footaburgh, in Walls, who died 8 August 1703, aged 84.

Andrew Mowat, of Garth. Married Elizabeth, only daughter of Mr Laurence Umphray, minister of Walls, who, on 1 April 1703 disponed to James Mitchell of Girlesta the lands of Garth and Collasetter, in Walls.

Thomas Mowat, of Garth. Born 1691. Served heir to his father 28 October 1730. Married 1718 Anna Bruce, daughter of Robert Bruce of Chalester.

Thomas Mouat, designed younger of Garth in a sasine of 1779. Married 1776 Elizabeth, daughter of William Nicolson of Lochend. He had no issue.

John Mouat of Annsbrae, Lerwick and Garth. Born in 1751. Died 12 December 1824. Married 1st Jean, daughter of Thomson of Moncraig. Married 2nd Catherine McMurdo.

Children by Jean Thomson:
1.	Margaret of Garth, died 31 July 1871. She married 1809 captain William Cameron, who died 1855. Their son Thomas succeded to Garth and Annsbrae.
2.	Elizabeth, died young.

William Mouat, of Garth. Died 25 February 1836. Married 28 April 1809 Elizabeth, only daughter of captain Alexander Cunningham of Pittarthie. He died without issue.
